Dancing mindfulness, created by Jamie Marich, has been described as “moving meditation.” We have known for thousands of years that the universal language of dance has many therapeutic benefits, and can be a powerful modality for self-expression.
Oftentimes we are faced with expressing our trauma through language, which can be difficult because we do not always have the language to express our trauma; whereas dancing mindfulness allows us to speak our trauma narrative without words.
The relationship between dance and mindfulness practices creates a new way to heal from trauma that involves our physical selves and expressive movement.
When we have experienced trauma, we can disconnect from our body; dancing mindfulness allows for reconnection and reintegration with the physical self.
This six-week series will facilitate an opportunity to find some healing from trauma through dancing mindfulness.
Each session will begin with education or information about the topic for the day (a mindfulness concept, trauma and the body, etc.), which will then be followed by freestyle dance paired with a theme and music. We will then end each session with a relaxation practice. There is no dance experience required, all skill levels are welcome!
In partnership with Move with GR Erin Craig LLMSW, Sarah Denick LMSW will be co-facilitating this group.
